Abstract

Funds are requested for the purchase of an inverted spectrophotometric confocal microscope and associated microinjection equipment. The equipment is needed for 9 projects to be conducted in 2 schools at the University of Reading. All 9 groups have BBSRC funding (aggregate value 2.2 million pounds), demonstrating internationally competitive science. Collectively they have an additional 4 million pounds funding from other research councils, charities and industry. All the groups also have preliminary confocal data, demonstrating technical expertise. The majority of the projects are unified by the theme of imaging protein location at high resolution in or around cells. The specific aims of the projects relate to BBSRC user-orientated themes, including: BCB themes of fundamentals of cell biology (intracellular signalling, regulation of gene transcription and translation, the cell cycle) and the cell and its environment (cell surface receptors and signal transduction); the Agri-Food theme of food quality; and Animal Science themes of Systems Biology and Disease Pathogenesis.
