Abstract

Pheromones incite profound effects on mammalian social and reproductive behaviours, yet the mechanisms through which they induce these physiological changes are poorly defined. In the proposed study, the signalling machinery utilised by the three distinct receptor families that have recently been cloned and identified as putative pheromone chemosensors (V1R, V2R, V3R) will be characterised and compared. Analysis will be made using recombinant expression systems as well as tissue slices from the vomeronasal organ. Fractionation of urinary pheromones will enable the molecular characterisation of specific ligand-receptor interactions for a given VR to be defined and to establish their topographical maps at the level of the vomeronasal organ.
