Abstract

Micronemes and rhoptries are essential for invasion by apiciomplexan parasites, but only a small number of proteins are characterised and their precise function is largely unknown. The protein repertoire of these two important secretory organelles will be identified for the first time using Eimeria tenella, a serious pathogen of chickens which is also an excellent model for biochemical studies on micronemes and rhoptries. Identification of the total protein content of micronemes and rhoptries will underpin studies on the biology of host cell invasion in E. tenella and lead to the identification of potential therapeutic targets against coccidiosis. Since structural homology and functional complementarity exists between organelle proteins of different genera, data from this project will also lead to the identification of novel organelle proteins in other apicocomplexans.
