Abstract

The overall objective of the work is to address the hypothesis that the occurrence and magnitude of the periparturient relaxation of immunity (PPRI) to gastrointestinal parasites in ewes is sensitive to nutrient supply. Our specific objectives are : 1) to test the effect of protein supply on the occurrence and magnitude of PPRI to Ostertagia circumcincta; 2) to investigate the effect of protein supply and the intensity of the reproductive effort on the temporal development and magnitude of PPRI; 3) to investigate the role of maternal, particularly protein, reserves on the occurrence and magnitude of PPRI; 4) to address the selective effect of nutrition on the separate effector mechanisms of the immune response to gastrointestinal parasites. The quantitative information generated from above will be used to 5) develop a framework that accounts quantitatively for the effects of host nutrition on the expression of immunity to O. circumcincta in periparturient ewes.
