Abstract

Ance and Acer are two Drosophila genes coding for enzymes related to human angiotensin-converting enzyme, ACE. The precise role of these peptidases is now known, but the importance of Ance is indicated by the existence of two mutant alleles, one of which is embryonic lethal, the other is semi- lethal and male infertile. In vitro studies indicate a new role for Ance in pro-hormone processing, however in vivo substrates have not been defined for either Ance or Acer. We will identify in vivo substrates of Ance and Acer, combining modern analytical techniques with molecular approaches. The effects of enzyme inhibitors, mutations and overexpression on Drosophila development and physiology will be studied to determine the physiological role of Ance and Acer.
