Abstract

The state-of-the-art HPLC requested under this bid will support the work of several researchers through identification and quantification of a range of biomolecules. These include: Dr G Lietz: quantification of beta-carotene, vitamin A, homocysteine and folate in foods and blood samples in studies concerned with understanding the molecular basis of inter-individual variation in responses to nutrients. Dr J Hall: identification and quantification of novel antimicrobial peptides from the avian intestine which may explain susceptibility/resistance of poultry to colonisation by the human enteropathogen Salmonella sp. Dr Dianne Ford: identification and quantification of isoflavones and their aglycones in studies of inter-individual differences in absorption and metabolism by human volunteers. Professor Harry Gilbert: identification, purification and quantification of a range of oligosaccharides in studies of hydrolysis and synthesis of glycosidic bonds with particular reference to substrate specificity and catalytic activity. Professor John Mathers: quantification of homocysteine, folate and other metabolites in the blood of elderly persons participating in a new cohort study of the biological factors (diet: genotype interactions) influencing healthy ageing (Northeast 85+ study). Dr Chris Seal: identification and quantification of a range of compounds with antioxidant properties in foods and blood samples in studies of bioprotective effects of specific foods include wholegrain foods.
