Abstract

It is clear from recent analysis that there are many mutations that block development of S. coelicolor after sporulation septum formation, or cause aberrant placement of the septum, which do not correspond to known sporulation (whi) loci. The aim of this work is to define, map and clone new whi loci which, in genetic terms, bridge the gap in the developmental pathway between the early stages of sporulation, as represented by the whiA, whiB, whiG, whiH, whil and whiJ loci, and the late stages of sporulation, as represented by sigF. The work will take advantage of the technological advances made possible by the recent construction of an ordered cosmid library for S. coelicolor, which will allow this important target to be achieved with a relatively small investment of resources.
