Abstract

In keeping with the momentum derived from the previous BBSRC-funded research programme, we propose to explore two interlinked core areas. These are (1) exploitation of the genetic characterisation of carbapenem biosynthesis and regulation through the continued biochemical characterisation of the cognate enzymatic pathway and (2) the detailed elucidation of the complex regulatory mechanisms that underly cell-cell signalling (quorum sensing) and the production of secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolite production of both Erwinia (e.g. carbapenems) and Pseudomonas (e.g. exoenzymes) are biotechnologically relevant and in both organisms quorum sensing plays a central regulatory role. Both core areas offer outstanding opportunities for underpinning the exploitation of novel microbial cell technology.
