Abstract

The overall aim of this programme is a 'proof of principle' in the design of novel carbohydrate ligands as candidate lead drug molecules effective against certain bacterial diseases such as cholera, by exploiting the fact that the host-pathogen interaction depends upon specific oligosaccharide-protein recognition phenomena. This will involve the rational design of drug molecules using high-resolution structural information on the carbohydrate-protein interaction in combination with molecular modelling and computational chemistry, together with screening for activity by biochemical assay and isotope-edited NMR experiments.
