Abstract

Hyaluronan plays a key role in organising the extracellular matrix, both in its own right by structuring aqueous rich environments (e.g. synovial fluid, vitreous humor) and as an organiser of proteins into fibrillar assemblies. The objectives of the proposal are to understand the dynamics of hyaluronan in a variety of environments within the extracellular matrix. These include: the effects of ions, water molecules, chain length (comparison between short oligosaccharides and large polymers), and how hyaluronan interacts with proteins. The ultimate goal is to understand how these interactions result in the organisation of hyaluronan-rich matrices.
