Abstract
Many models of speciation involve a stage in which parts of the genome are open to gene exchange while selection prevents introgression in other parts. Analyses of multi-locus sequence data have started to reveal such patterns in closely related Drosophila species. We propose to complement and extend these studies using a parapatric interaction between distinct morphs of the gastropod Littorina saxatilis occupying a steep environmental gradient. We will compare the pattern of sequence diversity and divergence in differentiated and undifferentiated parts of the genome and document the genomic extent of the differentiated regions. We will use the data to test hypotheses about the origin of the divergence using coalescent simulations. (Joint with grant 18139)
