Abstract

The genomes of members of the Saccharomyces senso stricto group of yeasts will be compared with one another, and with those of Saccharomyces castellii and Kluyveromyces lactis, in order to assess the role that reciprocal translocation has played in speciation within this group of yeasts. The phylogenetic relationships between these yeasts will be assessed using comparisons between both single-copy and repeated genes on nuclear chromosomes, the nuclear extrachromosome 2 micrometers, and the cytoplasmic extrachromosome mtDNA. The hypothesis that the S. cerevisiae genome underwent a complete duplication during its evolution will be tested, and genome rearrangements associated with apparently virulent clinical isolates of Saccharomyces assessed.
