Abstract

Using new molecular and statistical approaches we will examine 8 Mb of Xq to investigate heterogeneity of mutation and recombination and develop new models for the study of human genome diversity. Starting with six 1.5kb segments in each of 40 cosmids at intervals of 200 kb and a male population, variation will be examined in haplotype configuration. This will be extended to locate potential recombination hotspots and examine populations thought to have been subject to strong founder effects and genetic drift. Techniques for a single genealogical tree will be extended to analyse simultaneously several trees representing genealogies at distinct haplotype locations. The distribution of mutations and recombinations and the depth of genealogies along the 8 Mb haplotypes will be characterised. (Joint with grant 28/G09617).
