Abstract

CpG islands, which are associated with about 60% of genes in man, represent markers for the expressed portions of complex genomes. Recently developed methods to create genomic libraries enriched for CpG islands will be used to establish such libraries for pigs, cattle and chickens and a chromosome-specific CpG island library for porcine chromosome 6. CpG island clones, especially those from the chromosome 6 library, will be mapped to large fragment genomic clones in YAC or P1 vectors. Genetic markers will be developed from individual CpG island clones and mapped by linkage analysis. Therefore this project will contribute to the identification of genes and the development of both physical and genetic (linkage) gene maps of livestock.
