Abstract

Relating sequence information to biological function is a huge challenge in the post-genomic era. We will develop technology that will allow rapid identification of proteins that bind to small-molecule ligands. The technology will consist of novel and generic approaches to ligand immobilisation chemistry and new cDNA display libraries that display all expressed proteins on the surface of eukaryotic and prokaryotic viruses, linked to their encoding cDNA. This will allow automated biopanning of display libraries against any ligand. Information on binding activities will lead directly to identification of receptor-ligand partnerships and to conclusions on gene function. (Joint with grants 17690 and 17691).
