Abstract
This work will chemically, physically and biologically assess the effect of ageing on heavy metal availability in soils. Metal speciation in characterised field experiments will be compared with changes in metal forms and fluxes during a 30 month microcosm experiment. Analysis of metal speciation will be carried out using diffusion gradient thin film, isotope dilution and ion exchange equilibria techniques. The results of the speciation analysis will be compared with a range of soil bioassays including lux biosensors, Biolog, soil biomass and enzyme activity. The effect of metal availability (determined by biosensors) on xenobiotic degradation (by 14C mineralisation) will also be assessed. Specification of sites, pollutants and experimental phases has been driven by the requirements of industrialist partners who will have a steering and management role throughout the project.
