Abstract
Using genetically characterised strains of S. cerevisiae grown under controlled conditions, we shall seek the functions of novel genes uncovered in the genome sequencing programme by effecting the quantitative extraction of all the small molecular weight substances in the cells (the metabolome) and use spectroscopic methods to effect their discrimination and quantification. We shall exploit advanced chemometric methods to identify those features which are most discriminatory for particular genotypes of interest, and, by comparison with lesions in genes of known function, determine the functions of those presently unknown. (Joint with 36/E10149).
