Abstract
The generation of autonomously fluorescent proteins by tagging with GFP is having an impact upon the analysis of gene function that parallels the introduction of PCR. Multiple individual proteins can now be simultaneously monitored within the same cell or whole organism. Previously impossible characterisations of the dynamics of many cellular processes will become routine. We will capitalise on this development and use state of the art imaging technology to monitor protein distribution in real time and lapse studies to address fundamental problems of cell biology. Specifically we will study: the formation and function of the mitotic spindle in yeast, mammalian cells and trypanosomes; cell adhesion and stress perception.
