Abstract

Periplasmic nitrate reductases are widely distributed in bacteria and make a significant contribution to nitrogen turnover in a range of environments. We will study five topics central to the function of the periplasmic nitrate reductase system: (i) the structure of the active site and the mechanism of nitrate reduction (ii) electron transfer to the catalytic site within the protein (iii) electron transfer from ubiquinol to the periplasmic nitrate reductase (iv) periplasmic nitrate reductase biosynthesis and (v) transcriptional regulation of periplasmic nitrate reductase expression. Each area of study will provide information of relevance to a range of other bacterial electron transport systems.
