Abstract

The hypothesis that strain variation and strain targeting in scrapie are associated with glycosylation patterns of PrP protein will be tested. Transgenic mice with partial or complete absence of N-linked glycosylation in PrP will be produced and injected with specific strains of scrapie. Infected brain material will be subpassaged to establish whether alterations in glycosylation of PrP have affected either disease profile, replication of the agent or strain characteristics on subsequent passage.
