Abstract

This project will improve the recognition of protein structures and their possible functions in hitherto uncharacterised sequences. Sequence/structure templates will be derived for families within the CATH database of protein folds and scanned against protein sequences. Emphasis will be put on the use of partial, noisy sequence data, such as from predicted genes and translated ESTs in order to aid the characterisation of new genes. This will involve developing: 1) consensus sequence/structure templates for protein structural families 2) methods for scanning templates against sequence and EST databases to identify relatives 3) techniques for supporting complex schema evolution applied to the CATH database 4) web-based query strategies to access and display data
