Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to determine the contribution from different levels of molecular organisation in fibrillin rich tissues at which the characteristic viscoelastic biomechanical properties occur. This will use state-of-the-art X-ray diffraction techniques in conjunction with biomechanical measurements that allow the behaviour to be determined under physiological conditions. Fibrillin microfibrils are widely-distributed extracellular matrix assemblies that endow all dynamic connective tissues with long-range elastic recoil and form the template for tropoelastin in developing elastic fibres. This exciting and timely proposal is made possible by combing powerful complementary expertises and will reinforce and extend our successful collaboration.
