Abstract
The major objective of this proposal is to establish a Joint Sino-British Centre for Research on Avian Diseases led by Pirbright Institute and Shandong Binzhou Academy. It will also function as a virtual research centre with a number of Investigators from the partnering Institutes in both countries. The centre will provide infrastructure for basic research and training for post-doctoral scientists and students from both countries. The award objectives are summarised as follows: 1. Identify major avian disease challenges to develop joint research strategies to combat losses in both countries 2. Develop a platform for sustainable long-term partnerships with major Chinese Academic Institutions in avian disease research 3. Apply for joint research funding in both countries to strengthen the research base on avian diseases. 4. Developing future researchers in avian diseases through training of students and postdoctoral fellows. 5. Build plans for knowledge exchange and commercialisation from the joint research efforts.
Summary
UK-China Centre of Excellence for Research on Avian Diseases (CERAD) is supported by a five year grant funded by the BBSRC and the Newton Funds as a joint effort between the Pirbright Institute in the UK and the Shandong Binzhou Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine Academy in China. Functioning as a virtual research centre involving a number of collaborating research laboratories across the UK and China, CERAD promotes research for enhancing sustainable growth of the poultry industry by preventing major diseases that cause significant economic losses and animal welfare issues. Since its inauguration in April 2015 in Binzhou City in China, CERAD has organised three international meetings attended by a number of avian disease research scientists from both countries. The most recent 3rd Symposium held in Guildford was attended by nearly 60 delegates including 20 from China. As part of the objective of developing future researchers in avian diseases, CERAD actively promotes short/medium term exchange visits of a number of Chinese scientists and students for to the UK. CERAD has also served as a platform for joint supervision of PhD students from Chinese academic institutions. CERAD has also helped to strengthen the research base on poultry diseases in both countries by submitting collaborative grant applications to the funders in both countries. Recent success with some of these applications demonstrated the significance CERAD as a successful network for collaborative research to find solutions in poultry disease problems faced by the two countries. CERAD website (http://www.uk-china-cerad.org/) promotes recent topics related to avian disease research including the scientific publications of the partner organisations, as well as opportunities for funding. Members of CERAD are also actively involved in the organisation of International scientific conferences related to poultry diseases such as the forthcoming avian herpesvirus meeting in Yangzhou (https://www.mdv2018conference.net/) & GARAD (http://www.theeventsportal.com/GARAD-2018/3/Home).
