Abstract

If BSE has passed into sheep it is important to establish the whether sheep BSE is likely to transmit to man. In order to address this cattle BSE, sheep passaged BSE and natural scapie will be inoculated into transgenic mice in which the coding region of the endogenous PrP gene has been replaced by that of a human or bovine or sheep PrP gene. For each successful transmission a full titration will be set up in order to compare the susceptibility of each line to each agent. This will address the likelihood of sheep-passaged BSE transmitting to humans.
