Abstract

Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J), first isolated by our group in the late 1980s from the UK, has since spread rapidly world-wide and is one of the major diseases affecting the poultry industry today. In the field the disease associated with ALV-J occurs only in chickens selectively bred for meat production and this was related to the specific immunological tolerance of meat-type chickens to ALV-J infection. Although the exact basis for the tolerance is not clear, recently we identified novel endogenous retroviral elements in the chicken genome with 98% homology to the envelope gene of ALV-J. The proposed project is to examine the role of these novel elements in the induction of tolerance against ALV-J in meat-type chickens.
