Abstract

The Project involves the studies on the myeloid leukaemogenicity of avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J). This new virus causes serious losses from myeloid tumours in commercial meat-type breeding lines. The project aims to investigate the molecular epidemiology of the disease, antigenic variation among ALV-J, the pattern of inheritance of genetic resistance among different inbred and commercial lines of chickens and try to understand the molecular basis of oncogenicity and genetic susceptibility to ML induced by ALV-J. Studies will include in vitro transformation assays of cells using acute transforming variants of ALV-J as an alternative to the in vivo oncogenicity tests in birds. The results could provide a simple and rapid means of identifying resistant birds and a basis for selection of genetically resistant commercial stock.
