Abstract

In TSEs, the molecular events leading to the resulting neurodegeneration are poorly understood and, at present there is no effective pre-mortem diagnostic test or therapy for TS infection. In order to identify early molecular markers of disease and the molecular pathways involved in neurodegeneration following infection, we will characterise the differences in gene expression between infected and non- infected mouse brain with particular emphasis on the early stages of disease. The transcripts identified will be cloned, differential expression confirmed and expression profiles established by in situ hybridisation. Genes coding for these mRNAs will be isolated, sequenced and characterised and their expression patterns analysed in the blood and peripheral tissues of infected and control mice.
