Abstract
Examine the relationships between the variant viruses from different parts of Europe at the molecular level in order to determine if they have a common origin and if they have common features responsible for altered disease characteristics. Compare the DNA sequences and expression levels of important structural and regulatory genes of variant viruses to identify the genomic regions responsible for the altered pathogenicity. Characterise the biological properties of the variant strains of MDV in resistant and susceptible lines of chickens to elucidate mechanisms for the altered pathogenicity.
