Abstract

The purpose of this project is to provide support in statistical analysis, and aspects of research computing, to the other IFR science programmes. The staff effort on this project is coordinated centrally, but formally available IFR-wide. Specifically, activities conducted through this project are: (a) Data analysis input into projects, particularly where the amount of effort needed is only a fraction of staff time and where there is an expectation by the funding body that this effort and cost is met internally by IFR (e.g. as stated by BBSRC); (b) Enabling 'pump-priming': carrying out short-term, exploratory analyses in collaboration with researchers from the science programmes, where the goal is to produce proposals that include further long-term informatics funding, which would be based within the science groups. Activities in statistics and informatics that would otherwise be difficult to fund, for example the 'statistics helpdesk'. This offers immediately accessible in-house support in statistics and elements of software engineering, for example assistance to scientists in carrying out their own analysis (e.g. avoiding misuse of statistical methods, promoting best practice). It is coordinated by the Institute Statistician, who provides input into dozens of projects and proposals across IFR each year.
