Abstract

This project aims to pump-prime a permanent, in-house bioinformatics research programme in support of the post-genomic technologies in use at IFR. It will develop expertise in computational statistics and numerical modelling, data curation and mining, and will seek to integrate this skill base with the core science programmes of the Institute. Within this framework, research effort will be concentrated on metabolomics and, more generally, on the correlation and integration of different types of operomic research and data outputs. The key research challenges to be addressed are: 1) the development of statistical computing methods (data mining, modelling, visualization) for analysing high-dimensional data sets; 2) the production of software tools for carrying out such analysis, and for integration within database systems. 3) the design and implementation of relational databases, for integrating large locally-generated collections of heterogeneous data obtained from multiple genomic, post-genomic and non-`omic subdisciplines; 4) the integration of such databases with external knowledge bases.
