Abstract
This Project is aimed at determining the relationship between cell wall composition and structure and the mechanical properties of cells and tissues. We will develop and apply new spectroscopic methods to probe the nature of intermolecular and intramolecular interactions and mobility within the biopolymer networks of primary and secondary plant cell walls. This will require the analysis of cell wall materials of varying chemical composition. These will be obtained by chemical modification of plant tissues and through established formal and informal links with John Innes Centre for mutant materials and genetically modified materials
