Abstract

Nondividing (Go phase) yeast cells provide a genetically tractable model of the events whereby stress resistances influence chronological life span. This project will select long-lived yeast mutants directly; exploiting the fact that this organism has a stable haploid state. It can be expected to identify genes whose loss is somewhat detrimental for propagation of the species yet beneficial for long-term maintenance of nondividing cells. Thus it should reveal the prosenescence functions that exist in a simple eukaryotic genome. In parallel work, genomic approaches will be used to identify the major changes to the yeast proteome and transcriptome during the chronological ageing of Go cells.
