Abstract

The aim of this application is to develop a core light microscopy and image analysis facility for the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. The facility will provide state of the art technology for light microscopy based imaging. It will cater for the requirements of a wide group of scientists across the School working on topics ranging from the soil ecology through to the dynamics of gene expression in mammalian neuroendocrine systems. In vivo imaging of biological reporters will be possible, and inclusion of a photon counting camera will allow reporter gene expression to be quantified in individual cells in biological preparations. The equipment requested will enhance the applicants BBSRC and NERC funded activities in the following areas of research: Hazlerigg ¿ biological timing; Killham ¿ rhizosphere biology; Miller ¿ (neuro)endocrinology of energy metabolism and reproduction; Secombes ¿ fish immunology. In addition the project will support the scientific activities of more than 50 academics across the 3 departments of the school (Plant and Soil Sciences, Zoology, Agriculture and Forestry). The project will complement major SRIF funded reorganisation of facilities in School of Biological Sciences, and REI funding for the study of molecular expression received last year. The application has been designed to enhance synergy and coordination across its member departments, and has attracted substantial discounted funding.
