Abstract
The virus-like particles (VLPs) produced by the yeast Ty element are central to the mechanism of retrotransposition, they are structural and functional analogues of retrovirus cores, they are being used as antigen presentation systems to elicit both cellular and humoral responses in man and animals and they are models for novel, highly flexible assembly pathways. We aim to analyse the structure of Ty-VLPs using in vitro assembly and cryo EM and image reconstruction of normal and mutant Ty particles. This study will provide the most detailed model for a retro-particle to date, with implications for our understanding of retroviral assembly, vaccine design and retro-element mediated gene delivery.
