Abstract

It is proposed to undertake the little explored method of parallel mode EPR studies of several classes of metalloproteins. This method permits detection of EPR signals from metal ions with even numbers of unpaired electrons. Studies will be made of the haem-Cu pair at the active site for dioxygen reduction of terminal respiratory bacterial oxidases, including cytochrome bo; of the novel P-cluster and mutant forms of the proteins in nitrogenase; and of plant dioxygenases containing non-haem iron with the high-spin Fe(II) (S-2) state. This application seeks to underpin a LINK between research groups at the NFL (University of Sussex) and the Metallobiology Centre at UEA.
