Abstract

Two cysteine proteinases have been cloned from a tropical plant in a BBSRC feasibility study. This follow on application aims to be complete the programme of the original study by comparing two methods of mutagenesis for modification of a proteinase molecule. The modifications will improve its clinical role in treating tissue damage before tissue grafting. Highly efficient heterologous transgenic plant expression systems will be developed to produce high yields of these molecules. The system that will be developed is intended to be usable as a generic method of overproducing therapeutic proteins in plants.
