Abstract

This proposal will focus on the down-regulation of enzymes involved in the polymerisation process of the lignin polymer by transgenic technology. The biotechnological advantages associated with this work include the improvement of wood properties in commercially important tree species to make the pulp and paper production processes more efficient, with the potential to reduce environmental pollution. Other potential applications of this research include the improvement of the digestibility of forage crops. The specific objectives are: 1. To clone and characterise lignin-specific peroxidases from tobacco. 2. To generate transgenic tobacco plants with altered expression of these genes. 3. To characterise the pulping behaviour of these plants.
