Abstract

The aim of this proposal is to create a Centre of Excellence in Protein Technology, focusing on the following areas: (i) the design of ligands that bind tightly to a structurally defined target (such as thrombin) using a novel blend of combinatorial chemistry and database mining; (ii) synthesis of therapeutic proteins both by chemical and recombinant methods; (iii) new strategies for engineering proteins to improve their suitability in therapeutic applications; (iv) application of proteins in biocatalysis, in particular in bio-hydroxylations; (v) production of novel anti-viral carbocyclic nucleosides and analogues by pathway engineering. The framework of the Centre will be essential to the success of these interdisciplinary projects.
