Abstract

The role of a plasma membrane high affinity K+ transporter (HKT1) and the vacuolar H+ - PPase in K+ homeostasis will be investigated in transgenic wheat. The expression of HKT1 will be altered by introduction of an antisense construct and the activity of the H+ -PPase will be altered by expressing a soluble bacterial PPase to reduce PPi levels. The effects on K+ transport and K+ homeostasis in the cytosol and vacuole will be measured.
