Abstract
The lack of fundamental understanding of some of the mechanisms involved in soil-crop S cycling are identified and addressed in this proposal. The long-term effects of changes in atmospheric S inputs need to be related to the changes in its cycling. In particular, the mineralisation of organic S and the oxidation of elemental S in soils. The approach will use novel methods on unique samples and systems which have been managed in known ways for long time periods. Changes in the fluxes will be assessed by the stable isotope composition, and mineralisation using 35S radiolabelling.
