Abstract

The influence of APOE gene status on the degree of cognitive function change across a 65-year-plus interval will be tested in healthy old people. The independence of any genetic effect with respect to psycho-social and demographic influences of cognitive ageing will be examined. The study's subject will be 500 healthy survivors from the 1932 Scottish Mental Survey in which all Scotland's 11-year-olds were given a validated general mental ability test. Subjects will provide social, demographic and medical data and will undertake tests of general cognitive functioning and biological status. Genetic material for subjects will be stored to allow future examination of candidate genes for cognitive ageing.
