Abstract

A completely new strategy will be used to identify the loci that encode immunoprotective molecules of an antigenically complex protozoan pathogen. This work builds on the success of a 2 year BBSRC-funded pilot study and is driven by the need for sustainable, non drug-based, approaches for controlling coccidial parasites (Eimeria spp.) in chickens. Our strategy makes use of the genetics of the parasite in combination with parasite killing by the immune host. This powerful dual approach has the crucial technical strength of directing analyses towards the immunoprotective antigens and away from the far greater majority of parasite antigens that induce non-protective responses in the host.
