Abstract
The question of nociception and pain perception in fish has largely been ignored yet fish suffer injuries during angling, aquaculture and experimentation. This project will describe detailed physiological properties of nociceptors in the rainbow trout investigating stimulus-response characteristics as well as the effects of hyperalgesia, and will locate nociceptors on peripheral body areas for the first time in fish. Using selective attention strategies, the effects of a potentially painful stimulus on behaviour will be assessed to examine the interplay of pain and fear in the trout. This project not only applies to the welfare of fish but is of fundamental importance for our understanding of the evolution of nociception. (Joint with grant number 19811).
