Abstract

Divergence of equine influenza A(H3N8) viruses has resulted in two lineages of viruses that differ in their receptor specificity and antigenicity. The viral and cellular factors that specify receptor tropism, and the influence of modifications to receptor specificity on the antigenicity of the virus will be investigated. In addition, we will use the equine system to study the biological relevance and genetics of filamentous particle formation by influenza viruses and to probe the molecular events involved in virion assembly. During the project, a plasmid-based reverse genetics system will be established for the rescue of viruses with equine influenza viral genes and assessed for its potential to improve the engineering of vaccine viruses.
