Abstract

The role of the prefrontal cortex in recognition memory and its interaction with perirhinal cortex has been studied in rats. Similarly the contribution of the cholinergic system to familiarity discrimination within these cortical regions has not been explored. To assess the hypothesis that these three components functionally interact in the process of familiarity discrimination, the effects of disconnecting the perirhinal cortex, the prefrontal cortex and their cholinergic innervation will be investigated using behavioural and immunohistological techniques. Using these two levels of experimental analysis it will be possible to test the integrity of a functional neural system for recognition memory.
