Abstract

The segmentation of connected speech is often described as an explicit step prior to lexical access, or alternatively, as an implicit consequence of word recognition. This project proposes a unitary theoretical framework based on the claim that the type of segmentation relied upon depends on the availability of contextual and segmental information in the signal. The weights of the segmentation strategies are organised hierarchically, with implicit segmentation prevailing in optimal contextual/lexical conditions, and explicit segmentation called upon when these conditions are poor. Finally, prosodic segmentation, whereby strong syllables initiate lexical access, is considered when all other cues fail or in case of segmental degradation.
