Abstract

Auditory processing in the cricket will be explored to investigate neural coding principles and the link between neural circuits, sensorimotor systems and behaviour. In contrast to previous studies our recent models and neurophysiological data emphasise the importance of afferents and first order interneurons for pattern recognition and orientation. To test these new hypotheses we will integrate behavioural, neurophysiological and robot experiments, using identical acoustic stimuli paradigms including complex sound fields. Recordings from auditory afferents and identified interneurons will be analysed in relation to behavioural results and directly used to fine- tune an artificial neuronal network controlling phonotactic steering of a robot.
