Abstract
Protozoa of the genus Eimeria are the major parasitic pathogens of intensively reared livestock and comprise an important evolutionary branch within the Apicomplexa. In this project, a 5-fold random shotgun coverage of the genome of the avian species E. tenella will be obtained. The data will be made publicly available, thus facilitating the identification of new targets for vaccination and chemotherapy, as well as contributing to our knowledge of basic parasite biology. The economic importance of Eimeria species and their close relatedness to Plasmodium, Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium, means that the data generated in this project will also be of great value to the broader apicomplexan research community.
