Abstract
Selection of a single dominant follicle (DF) is the outcome of ovarian follicle growth in several monovulatory species including humans and cattle. Final stages of this selection process have been characterised in detail in cattle, yet mechanisms employed by one single follicle to attain dominance are largely unknown. We propose to establish and compare SAGE libraries from granulosa cells of follicles recovered before and after DF selection, identify candidate genes involved in DF selection, and use microarrays to screen candidate genes to identify key regulators of DF selection. This work will provide an essential background for studies into DF selection and enhancement of ovarian function in several species.
