Abstract

Using an avian model system, the main aim of this application is to find out whether a reported higher early mortality in males relative to females is attributable to sex differences in vulnerability to poor embryonic conditions. Previous work has not controlled for confounding influences of the competitive environment and the correlation between embryonic and nestling environment. This project will apply a broad and integrated experimental approach, combining morphometric, biochemical, physiological and behavioural methods to the comparison of the vulnerability of male and female offspring. We will not only look at one aspect of offspring growth, but look at the development of a wide range of body functions and the interactions between these.
